Uncle Jack

Master Edition Print on canvas - framed

85 x 85 cm

$2100 (including frame)

It took ten months to complete this portrait of my Uncle Jack Charles – an acclaimed Actor. He’s an inspiration to me in many ways and I’m proud to have him as my elder and family. This is another of my works that is completed entirely in traditional style dots to honour our ancestors and connection to the land. This particular piece explores that symbiotic fusion of land and water – the cool and the warm – the balance of nature that sustains us all. It's been a complete devotion and I hold such deep respect for Uncle Jack.

Within this painting is the depiction of Mt Coolum, Mt Ninderry, Maroochy River and the Ocean at Coolum Beach surrounded by the natural bush land as to show the relationship and cycles of life that have been on going for millions of years.. As the ocean spray from the surf rises into the clouds and precipitates in the mountains and flows into the river and back to the ocean for the process to begin again.. These natural elements are reflective of the creative influences, the constant renewal and flow of life that reminds us of the part we play in keeping our environment clean and sacred. As the visionaries and dreamers come to gather in this special Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi land, the ancient wisdom and dreams of the landmarks will be the foundation for our future.

PORTRAIT PAINTER ARTIST

Jandamarra Cadd – a Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Warung descendent, is an inspirational man with many stories to tell. With his vibrant and expressive portraitures, Jandamarra’s artwork is emotive and insightful – and is a powerful medium to bridge the story telling divide between Aboriginal and mainstream Australia.

Painting has been a way of life that has enabled him to express his creativity and storytelling and in many of his paintings of the human condition, he seeks to be a peaceful voice for unity. Jandamarra uses a variety of styles and mediums, with his unique blend of traditional aboriginal art techniques along with his own signature contemporary portraiture.

Jandamarra’s most recent work, is a series of painting for his Solo Exhibition ‘Cultural Custodians’. His painting titled ‘County is within’ shows how the relationship to Country and the sacred songs, dances, ceremonies around this are expressed externally and are all reflective of a spiritual relationship that derives from within and inseparable from identity. When Aboriginal people catch up with one another they don’t generally ask “What job do you have?” Or “What car do you drive?” They usually ask “Where’s your mob from?” And “Where’s your country at?” This is as to understand how we relate to one another through the song lines and the identity of our connection to the land and place in the oneness of life above, below, and all around.

So, when I paint Jacquie Sandy connected to the forest and especially the Bunya trees, which are an integral part of her mob’s county, I am sharing he identity and relationship to over 2000 generations of embedded cultural knowledge and connection to all those ancestors and the memories before her, which is all part of the healing and remembering who we really are as living sovereign beings and walking tall with all that lives and exists around us.

Jandamarra has not only been a finalist in every major Portrait Art Prize in Australia, but is also in very high demand as an Inspirational Speaker and Ambassador. Jandamarra is SONDER STUDIO GALLERY’S highly respected Indigenous Artist Ambassador.
