This artwork was created when Mehdi was 16 and still detained on Nauru. Eight years later he re-visited his drawing and wrote: "22 July is the darkest day of my history. Exactly 8 years ago at 22 July 2013, I reached Christmas island when I was just 15 years old. They gave me a number and that was my identity! Today 22 July 2021 after 8 long years, I'm still in detention..."

'Versus'.

2021.

I stopped counting the days a long time ago. I stopped having dreams and plans about my future. I said goodbye to those a long time ago too. I left home when I was 15, by myself. Australia locked me up and threw away the key. Now my only dream is that one day, wishfully, I'll get to hug my mother one more time.

'Visa'.

2021.

I didn't commit any crimes. All I did was ask for safety when I was a child and I did the time for that by spending almost a decade in detention. What's sadder than this unfair and cruel policy is the lack of significant support it has from the Australian community. I wish I'd never asked you for safety.

'Green July'.

2021.

On the 22nd of July it will be eight years in detention. Last July I told myself that it will be the last July that I am in detention but it seems like the July's in detention are never going end. As you all know, the most precious thing on earth is time. When it goes, it will never come back. I'm 23 years old. That's one-third of my life lost to detention. The most formative years of my life are gone. These are the years in which I was supposed to spend being a child, going to school, and choosing a pathway for my future. Instead, these were eight years spent in detention, experiencing frustration, misery, and trauma.

'BITA'.

2021.

If a fifteen year-old boy came to your home asking for help and safety, would you put him in a cage? I came to Australia and asked for help and safety eight years ago and instead I was detained and tortured. Why?

'etude in F#'.

2021.

Some say freedom is not about a place, but a state of mind. But that's not true. Once a person is in a cage, they are not free. They're a prisoner. They're a detainee. They're not free.

What does a fair go mean in Australia?

Australians have always understood a Fair Go to be the true expression of the treatment we expect from one another, a reflection of the Golden Rule expressed in the Gospels according to Luke and Matthew: 'Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. We should all be afforded respect and equality.

I have not received any basic human rights since 2013 until now...

Mehdi Ali

Mehdi Ali is a refugee, who is still suffering in Australian detention, after seven years of incarceration on the tiny 21sq km island nation of Nauru. He committed no crime and like many others is a political pawn for attempting to seek safety in Australia by boat.

Mehdi’s art means nothing. At the time of painting his canvas’s, the action means everything. He tries to meditate into feeling freedom, but like a dream, the glimpse of freedom disappears from his mind. All remains is a coloured flat thing to give away.
